The first rain soaked pitch of the season saw a well contested match at the Reg Madgwick Stadium.
Worcester Park came to us looking to climb the early league table with Cobham looking to keep their league season on track after crashing out of the Division 1 cup on Tuesday night at the hands of Staines Lammas in extra time.
It was only 10 minutes in to the match when the curse of the Cobham full back struck for the third time this season. With Anthony Nazareth and Ross Cull already nursing broken bones occurring during earlier matches, this time it was poor David Imosilli deputising at left back who succumbed to a nasty twist of the knee and another hospital trip for one of the Hammers. Needless to say we all wish David a speedy recovery.
Midway through the the first half, Sam Wright who had started brightly managed to latch on to a loose ball on the edge of the visitors box and he made no mistake lashing home a right foot half volley to open the scoring.
What should have settled the home team down seemed to spur on Park who drove their midfield forward looking for an equaliser. Confusion in the box allowed Welch to slot home unmarked from 5 yards just before half time.
The second half began with Cobham looking more assured. The ball retention was better with Powponne, Yeboua and Diakite getting hold of the midfield and allowing Abisogun the space to make his mazy dribbles. Much of the play started to be based in the opposition half.
On 55 minutes, Truman picked up the ball on the left, began cutting in to the box and bamboozling the defenders before rifling a left footed shot low in to the far corner 2-1.
Worcester Park continued to plough forward but Mark Farr and captain Weighill were repelling any aerial threat thrown their way.
As the game wore on the inevitable gaps began to appear, and Yeboua had a typical drive forward with 9 minutes left on the clock only to have his unselfish square pass intercepted by the keeper as it looked certain that Truman would wrap the game up.
It wasn't too long to wait however as in the dying movements Diakite scored a wonderful virtuoso goal worthy of retirement on the spot. Jinking past one defender on the edge of the box then lobbing the ball over the next two to get in his way, the mecurial man then perfectly lobbed the keeper too with only inches to work with to make it 3-1 right on the referees final whistle.
A very tight game which showed up the Cobham spirit and character that is emerging in this squad.
Next up is Lingfield in the FA Vase on Saturday. Come on you Hammers!
