U16’s move into third place after double header

Poor weather over the past few weeks has resulted in our U16’s playing double header matches, the first of which took place on Sunday against Bedfont Eagles.

This is never an ideal situation especially if you are fighting for top of the table, because you play two matches over a shortened period. Nonetheless the young Hammers in the SYL Premier Division proved why they are in contention coming out winners in both games away at Bedfont.

Match 1, saw Cobham on the offensive from the start and after 7 minutes Joey Brian opened the scoring with a well worked counter attack down the right-hand side. Just 1 minute later Max Cornish caught the goal keeper out and rounded him with a tap in making it 2-0. A third goal came after 14 minutes again from Brian and a quality pass by CDM Adam Brennan. Cobham continued the pressure and Cornish came close twice more with a lob that hit the post and another that went over the bar.

Into the second half and Cobham remain dominant and score a 4th after Captain Tyrese Cummings heads home for a corner by George Sellick. Bedfont manage to get a late goal finishing off the first match 1-4 to the visitors.

Match 2, starts more evenly and Bedfont’s physical and direct approach requires Cobham to step up and deal with the situation. At half time the score is 0-0 and with shortened games the pressure is on Cobham to score. The response in the second half reveals how competitive and determined the Cobham team has become and after wave after wave of pressure, finally Bedfont concede from another corner smashed home by the head Captain Cummings. Five minutes later a through ball by Sellick leaves Cornish one on one and he slides the ball home coolly to take the Hammers into a 0-2 lead and the win.

Congratulations to a great squad performance and some great managerial decisions by Pete Doherty. The team now sites in third place in the SYL Premier Division and games in hand over the opponents above them.

Joint MoM’s can be seen here Tyrese Cummings and Max Cornish.
