On a warm early Summer evening on the 14th May, Cobham won their first piece of silverware since 2002 (ironically the CCL Premier Cup) with a 3-1 win over North Greenford United.
Although the game was played in fairly convincing fashion by the Hammers, 2-0 up at half time and cruising for much of the second half, there was classic cup final drama to come as the game approached its crescendo.
After Reis Stanislaus had put the Hammers in the lead before a Derick Hayford header made it two, Cobham spent much of the second half probing the opposition but all in a very calm and controlled manner. It was somewhat of a surprise then, when with 10 minutes to go Richie Mbele struck an exocet from fully 35 yards in to the top corner. Knight could only watch it rocket past him. It was game on, and then in the 90th minute, more theatre as Alexiou was adjudged to have pulled down a United forward, penalty. If Knight was forced to watch the Mbele strike go in, he was certainly not about to do so again, judging the angle of the kick perfectly and making the save from the spot kick, honourable mention to Gbadamassi who cleared the follow up coming out of nowhere.
The Hammers then raced up the other end to put the game to bed and just when Elijah Simpson looked to have over run his attempt to round the keeper, he simply turned and bounced an audacious back heel over the keeper to make it 3-1 and secure the win. There was still time for Osborne to race through to be hauled down and the impressive Greenford skipper was shown red for his troubles.
3-1 it ended and Cobham lifted the trophy for first time in 23 years and gave Craig Lewington his first piece of silverware as the Hammers manager.
