We caught up with Manager Craig Lewington on the eve of the new season.....

We caught up with new Manager Craig Lewington to discuss how pre season has gone and any updates to the playing squad.

So Craig, pre season back in the hot seat of management, how has it gone so far?
Really good, pre season always feels like it gets earlier and earlier each year and with the warm weather and hard ground, knowing there’s a lot of hard work for the lads to put in, it can be a little daunting. But as soon as they all turned up, smiles on their faces, good sprit amongst them all and eagerness to work, you quickly get back in to the swing of things.
In fairness to them all, they’ve all worked really hard and I’d say we’re about where we should be right now in terms of sessions, fitness and team cohesion. But a season is a long slog and we all know that it’s no good being on it for a couple of weeks, it’s a mentality thing.

Any changes to the playing squad?
Most of the lads have all reported back for pre season training which is always the first battle, but we have a good core of players who are cobham through and through and so the base is already here. We had a long look at the areas that we were light on or needed to strengthen and we’re really pleased with our additions so far.
Jamie Byatt, Derick Hayford and Anthony Kozakis have all joined to add quality and competition to the front line.
Jamie Di Giuseppe will be a massive boost to us as a natural left footed full back. And after the retirement of Lee Norman and Will Lacey moving on upwards, we have managed to bring in two keepers as well and then a sprinkling of other players and positions and good lads who have already brought positive energy to the dressing room.

How have the friendlies been?
We purposely picked tough games to get us up to speed and to highlight the areas we need to work on. There has probably only been one really that we were disappointed with how we applied ourselves. I think we’ve learnt a lot as we’ve gone and have got the levels right up there. We’ll find out soon enough!

So what’s the hope for the season?
Without sounding generic and boring, the hope is to get as many points as possible, get things right amongst the playing squad and see where it takes us. It’s a big year for the club development wise and we want to start something to match that on the pitch.
